The central element of the Origata binding is a wrapper of folded paper that provides the support for sewing the pages and attaching the covers. This core principle echoes the Japanese practice of origata – the art of wrapping objects in folded paper.
I made a variation of the Origata binding after the design by Julie Auzillon. The book fits in the Japanese magic box where both the book and accompanying Asian herbs & teas are in the different, hidden compartments. The marbled vintage maps I used, are marbled by Jemma Lewis Marbling.
This book was my entry for a Dutch national bookbinding competition ‘The Promiss’ and received the first prize from both the jury and the audience. Read more here.
