My artist binding of Rag & Pulp • creativity with paper | UPPERCASE Encyclopedia.
So honored to be invited to participate in this bookbinding challenge. Janine Vangool, the publisher and designer of @uppercasemag, shared unbound copies of the Rag & Pulp book. These were given to different binders who were tasked with creating unique covers based on the contents.

I do love to get creative with paper and this book inspired me to create a knitted boards binding.
The book block was sewn on raised cords in the traditional way, but this time not on linen or hemp but on paper cords. The same paper cord was also used to create the boards that were knitted and stiffened. The spine of the book is lined with Japanese paper between the cords.
•
The use of knitted boards made from paper cord is an original and ingenious design by Marja Wilgenkamp, a Dutch bookbinder with a background in textiles.
•
I did not feel the need to add additional decoration or a title to the spine. This time it’s just the delicate interlacing pattern.
